Chad Daybell, a self-published author known for his novels about near-death experiences and doomsday events, made headlines in 2019 when he was accused of the murders of his ex-wife, as well as his current wife’s two children.
Daybell married Lori Vallow in 2019 and the couple was officially indicted on first-degree murder charges on May 25, 2021.
Daybell’s late ex-wife, Tammy Daybell, died in 2019 under suspicious circumstances. Her autopsy revealed she died of asphyxiation. Vallow was arrested in Hawaii in February 2020 after failing to provide proof of life for her children, JJ and Tylee, who had disappeared in September 2019. Vallow was charged with child abandonment and obstructing the investigation, and was later extradited to Idaho.
Vallow’s trial began in April 2023 and she was convicted of all charges, subsequently receiving a life sentence in prison in July of the same year. Daybell, on the other hand, faced delays in his legal proceedings. His lawyer filed a petition to withdraw from the case in January 2024, citing the complexity of the case and exhaustion of payment options. However, the judge denied the petition to prevent further delays in the trial.
Daybell remained incarcerated at Fremont County Jail until March 21, 2024, when he was transferred to Ada County Jail to await trial. The trial is set to begin on April 1, 2024, with Daybell facing first-degree murder charges in connection to the deaths of his ex-wife and Vallow’s two children.
The disappearance of JJ, 7, and Tylee, 17, sparked a massive search effort by authorities and family members. The children were last seen in September 2019, with Daybell and Vallow claiming they were staying with friends. However, the children’s remains were discovered buried in a pet cemetery on Daybell’s property in June 2020, wrapped in plastic bags.
