Dan Rather, a native of Wharton, Texas, was born on October 31, 1931. He kickstarted his journalism journey by earning a degree in journalism from Sam Houston State University in 1953. Beginning his career at the Associated Press, Rather later transitioned to the United Press before securing a position as a TV broadcaster for ABC affiliate KTRK-TV in 1959. His rise to broadcasting fame continued when he joined CBS affiliate KHOU-TV in 1960, covering notable events such as Hurricane Carla and later becoming a correspondent for CBS News’ Southwest Bureau, as well as a correspondent for 60 Minutes from 1975 to 1981.
Dan Rather went on to serve as an anchor for CBS Evening News for 24 years until his departure from the network in 2006 when his contract was not renewed. Despite facing challenges, including a controversy surrounding a story in 2004, Rather continued to persevere in his career. He was later engaged by AXS TV to host his segment called Dan Rather Reports and eventually The Big Interview with Dan Rather.
In a surprising turn of events, it was announced in April 2024 that Rather would be returning to CBS News after 18 years for an interview on CBS Sunday Morning. The upcoming episode, scheduled for April 28, will see Rather discussing his time at the network and reflecting on his extensive career.
