Rudy Guede, the man convicted of the horrific murder of Meredith Kercher in 2008, was released from prison in 2021 after serving 13 years of his 16-year sentence. Guede, who was born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, was initially sentenced to 30 years in prison for the sexual assault and murder of Kercher.
Guede’s sentence was later reduced to 16 years, and he was released on November 24, 2021, 45 days earlier than planned for good behavior. In a statement to The U.S. Sun, Guede’s lawyer, Fabrizio Ballarini, confirmed that his client had paid his debt to justice and is now a free man.
During an interview with The U.S. Sun, Guede expressed his remorse for the loss suffered by the Kercher family and stated that he tried to save Meredith by putting towels on her wounds. He also highlighted that court documents indicated others were present at the crime scene and that he did not inflict the fatal wounds.
Subsequently, Guede was rearrested in 2023 for allegedly abusing his ex-girlfriend. He was placed under an electronic monitoring tag and a 1,600-foot restraining order as he awaits trial for the new charge.
Amanda Knox, who was previously wrongfully convicted in the murder case of Meredith Kercher along with her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, criticized the handling of Guede’s case. Knox highlighted that Guede had been able to cause harm to more young women since his release and questioned the adequacy of his sentence reduction and release for good behavior.
In light of the recent developments, Amanda Knox remains vocal about her experience during the trial and expresses her shock and disbelief at Guede being labeled the “forgotten killer.” She expressed her frustrations at carrying the burden of his crime and lamented the suffering caused as a result of Guede’s actions.
As the legal drama surrounding Meredith Kercher’s murder continues to unfold in 2024, many remain curious about the fate and implications of the different convictions in the case, including that of Rudy Guede.
