Eleven-year-old Ghanaian artist Fotocopy recently opened up about his creative process in a conversation with DJ Slim on Daybreak Hitz.
When asked about how he finds inspiration for his compositions, Fotocopy shared that his music is influenced by the things he sees and the books he reads.
“I get my imagination from the things I see and books I read, and I don’t write the songs. Because of some of them, I sing in Twi, and I’m not really good at writing Twi because my school won’t allow you to learn Twi there. We do Spanish, French, Dutch.
It’s better that I do it in audio and send it to my dad. Then, he’d call for a group meeting, and we’d help with arrangements. I go to the studio, record… my dad does everything. He helps with the writing of songs, he video-directs, he does everything,” he explained.
Fotocopy also expressed his admiration for his dad’s collaborative approach, stating that his dad makes the songs in a way that he understands and feels comfortable in his delivery.
Speaking about his freedom to express himself, Fotocopy mentioned, “I’m very very free with my dad, so with stuff like that, I’m able to say oh dad I think it’s not supposed to be this way, we share ideas together. My dad is the closest person I’ve been with. He’s the coolest dad, I’m telling you.”
When discussing how he manages his music career alongside his education, Fotocopy shared, “On Mondays to Fridays are my busy days, I don’t joke with my education. But on weekends, I can do music as long as I want.”
