Toronto Raptors power forward Jontay Porter’s time with the team has come to an abrupt end after he was banned from the NBA for violating their gambling rules.
The league announced on April 17, 2024, that Porter had disclosed confidential information, limited his participation in games for betting purposes, and even bet on NBA games, which led to his lifetime ban.
The investigation found that prior to the Raptors’ game on March 20, Porter shared information about his health status with an NBA bettor.
This individual then placed an $80,000 bet that Porter would underperform in the game, leading to a loss of $1 million. Additionally, Porter limited his own game participation to influence the outcome of bets on his performance.
The NBA is taking these violations very seriously, stating that the integrity of competition is of utmost importance.
Commissioner Adam Silver expressed that the consequences could be severe, including a ban from the game, due to the seriousness of Porter’s actions.
Porter signed with the Toronto Raptors on December 9, 2023, after stints with the Memphis Grizzlies, Detroit Pistons, and the Motor City Cruise.
However, his promising career has now been cut short due to his involvement in illegal gambling activities.
