Renowned director, Luca Guadagnino, is known for creating emotionally charged films, and his latest project is no exception.

Challengers, a romantic sports drama film, is already generating buzz and acclaim prior to its release, with critics praising the performances of the cast, Guadagnino’s artistic shots, and the film’s compelling storyline.

The story of Challengers revolves around the intertwined lives of three characters – Tashi, a former tennis prodigy turned coach, her husband Art, and her ex-boyfriend Patrick.

The trio, who were once close friends, find themselves caught in a love triangle as Art and Patrick become each other’s competitors in an upcoming tennis match. While the movie delves into real people and authentic performances, it is not based on a true story.

Screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes drew inspiration for his debut screenplay from his family’s history and a particular tennis match he watched. Kuritzkes, while researching his grandfather’s life, was struck by the cinematic potential of a controversial coaching incident during a tennis match between Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka. This incident became the foundation for the narrative of Challengers.

The film features a stellar cast, with Zendaya portraying Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy now coaching her struggling husband, Art, played by Mike Faist.

Josh O’Connor stars as Patrick Zweig, Tashi’s ex-boyfriend who becomes Art’s competition in tennis and love. The ensemble is completed by Jake Jensen, Bryan Doo, Shane T. Harris, Nada Despotovich, and Naheem Garcia.

Guadagnino describes Challengers as “a fizzy, sexy movie about the world of tennis,” highlighting the intricacies of the three central characters. The film is set to premiere in the US on April 26, 2024, after an initial delay due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.

Distributed by Amazon MGM Studios, viewers can expect Challengers to hit streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video approximately 60 to 80 days after its theatrical release.
