Nigerian musician Davido has stirred up controversy with his recent comments about the country’s economy, leading to threats of cancellation of his upcoming December show in Nigeria.
The singer made headlines after appearing on an American podcast, where he warned Americans against relocating to Africa, specifically Nigeria, citing the country’s economy as being in “shambles.”
This statement sparked backlash from Nigerians both at home and abroad, with prominent figures like Joe Igbokwe and Reno Omokri criticizing Davido for tarnishing Nigeria’s image on a global platform.
In response to the criticism, Davido defended his stance by highlighting the role of entertainers as the country’s “real ambassadors.” He took to social media to address the backlash, stating, “Yall mad cus we the real ambassadors!”
However, the controversy escalated further when Davido revealed that his Lagos performance is in jeopardy due to his remarks about the economy.
In a tweet, he mentioned that there are threats to cancel his show because of his interview, adding, “Dem say dem go cancel my show cus of my interview…loooool I don’t have to perform in Nigeria.”
