Peaky Blinders fans have a reason to celebrate as a new film featuring Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy has been announced. The star will be reprising his role as Tommy Shelby in the much-anticipated movie.
“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me,” Murphy stated in a press release confirming his return to the iconic gangster role. Netflix shared a snapshot of the script titled “A Peaky Blinders Film” to break the news to fans.
The film will be a continuation of the popular BBC series created by Steven Knight, which aired for six seasons from 2013 to 2022. Season one director Tom Harper will be at the helm of the new project.
Murphy expressed his excitement about working with Knight and Harper again, stating, “This is one for the fans.” In addition to starring in the film, the Irish actor will also serve as a co-producer.
Knight promised fans an “explosive chapter” in the Peaky Blinders saga, describing the movie as “full-on Peaky Blinders at war.”
The storyline will see the Shelby family navigating through the Second World War, with production scheduled to begin in Birmingham in September.
Murphy’s portrayal of Tommy Shelby has earned him widespread acclaim, propelling him to stardom in notable films such as The Dark Knight Batman franchise, Inception, and 28 Days Later.
His stellar performance in the film Oppenheimer, released in 2023, garnered him several prestigious awards, including an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and a Screen Actors Guild award.
