Accusations have been leveled against actor and aspiring member of parliament, John Dumelo, by some X users.

These individuals have criticized Dumelo for his alleged lack of clear convictions regarding the anti-LGBTQ bill currently being discussed.

The backlash came after Dumelo made comments during an interview with Starr FM’s Bola Ray regarding the controversial Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, also known as the “anti-gay bill.”

In the interview, Dumelo stated that he aligns with the position of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on the bill, emphasizing the party’s support for the legislation aimed at protecting “family values” in Ghana.

Despite aligning with the NDC’s stance, Dumelo refrained from stating his personal position on the matter, citing his respect for individuals’ privacy.

However, his remarks have stirred controversy among some X users who pointed out his past role in the movie “Men in Love,” where he portrayed a gay character.

In the 2010 Nigerian film, Dumelo played the role of a character experiencing marital challenges exacerbated by the arrival of a gay friend who was under a curse.

Following the release of the movie, Dumelo publicly denied being gay, clarifying that the film depicted homosexuality as a result of demonic influence.

The recent comments made by Dumelo have sparked a debate among X users, with some questioning his intentions as he ventures into politics while seemingly supporting progressive causes.

The passing of the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill by Parliament, criminalizing LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, has also added fuel to the ongoing conversation.

While President Akufo-Addo has withheld his assent to the bill pending a challenge to its constitutionality in the Supreme Court, the discussion around the legislation and the stance of public figures like Dumelo continues to unfold.
