Award-winning media practitioner and the ‘Chairman-General’ of radio, Kwami Sefa Kayi, has called for the establishment of basic standards for all radio stations in Ghana.

In a recent interview on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning, he emphasized the need for the National Media Commission, Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), and other media bodies to implement these standards to regulate the content broadcast on radio waves.

Sefa Kayi expressed his disappointment in the lack of adherence to basic broadcasting journalism standards in the country.

He highlighted the proliferation of radio stations, many of which are politically and commercially owned, leading to a compromise in the quality of content being produced.

He suggested that if proper regulations were put in place from the early stages of media development, the current unprofessionalism in the sector could have been avoided.

The veteran broadcaster also touched on his decision to switch from English to Akan language for his flagship programme, ‘Kokorokoo,’ on Peace FM.

He explained that this move was to challenge the misconception that local language-speaking presenters were of low journalistic standards. Sefa Kayi expressed his satisfaction with the decision, stating that he has learned valuable lessons from the local dialect and enjoys the journey.

As he looks towards the future, Kwami Sefa Kayi has no plans of retiring from his career at Peace FM.

He remains committed to his work and continues to advocate for higher standards in Ghana’s media industry.
