Dr. Tiah Kabiru Mahama, the Technical Advisor to the Vice President, has shed light on Ghana’s decision to seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He stated that going to the IMF was the last resort for the government, highlighting that it was not a program that any country would desire. However, due to the lack of viable alternatives, the government had no choice but to seek the assistance of the IMF.

Dr. Mahama emphasized that the funds received from the IMF were used for Ghana’s development, with major projects including the construction of roads, infrastructure, and the development of the country’s railways system.

He also noted that the government has employed over one million people in the public sector, ensuring that they receive salaries, including those already on its payroll.

He further defended the Bank of Ghana’s decision to extend credit to the central government, expressing hopes that it will help the government navigate the crisis until normalcy returns.

Dr. Mahama stressed that the government can account for the money received from the IMF, indicating that the assistance has been utilized for the country’s benefit.
