Investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni has called on Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to take a more proactive approach in fighting corruption, emphasizing that corruption is a significant hindrance to the country’s economic development.

During an appearance on JoyNews’ The Probe, Manasseh stressed that reducing corruption could lead to substantial tax reductions and overall national progress. He highlighted that the government’s commitment to fighting corruption could result in significant savings that could be channeled into other sectors, ultimately leading to economic growth.

Manasseh Azure acknowledged Dr Bawumia’s recognition of corruption in his speech on digitalisation but urged for a more assertive stance in tackling corruption across various sectors. He cited the example of Estonia, where business registration can be completed within 15 minutes, emphasizing the positive impact of efficient processes on the economy.

Regarding Dr Bawumia’s recent address on Ghana’s Next Chapter: Selfless Leadership and Bold Solutions for the Future at the University of Professional Studies in Accra, Manasseh expressed the need for Dr Bawumia to address the government’s unfulfilled promises and to outline specific plans to combat corruption effectively.

However, Dr Bawumia has come under criticism for his analogy of being a “driver’s mate” as Vice President, with many expressing the view that he could have had a more significant impact as the chairman of the Economic Management Team.

In response to the criticism, Manasseh Azure stated that it is not surprising to see Dr Bawumia distance his campaign from the current government, given its perceived poor performance. He emphasized the importance of acknowledging unmet promises and outlined a need for a more robust plan to combat corruption effectively.
