IMANI-Africa’s Senior Vice President, Kofi Bentil, has stated that he will not hesitate to criticize Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia if he appoints officials from the current Akufo-Addo-led government if he is elected.

Bentil expressed his belief that the current regime and its appointees are the biggest baggage of the 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

During an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile, the outspoken lawyer emphasized the need for the Vice President to form a new regime that is completely independent of the current one.

He also criticized the current government, stating that it has been “terribly corrupt” and has disappointed many Ghanaians.

Bentil further asserted that the next government will not be President Akufo-Addo’s government and emphasized that he does not want to see key members of the current government in the Vice President’s team. He warned that he would criticize Bawumia if he does so.

The Senior Vice President’s statements come in response to Dr. Bawumia’s plans for his potential term if elected, which include scrapping the E-levy, emissions tax, VAT on electricity, betting tax, and reducing the number of ministers to fifty. These proposals have faced criticism from various quarters, including the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and social media users.

Bentil also defended Bawumia’s actions and objected to the perception that he did not fight against certain policies of the government.

He explained that the Vice President had expressed objection to the E-levy and had influenced the decision to exempt GH₵100, despite the ultimate decision to implement the tax.
