Lawyer Kofi Bentil has addressed misconceptions about his political stance, denying claims of neutrality and instead affirming his independence.

This clarification follows his expressed support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential bid.

During an interview on Newsfile, Bentil emphasized that he has always been independent and committed to evaluating issues objectively. He quoted South African human rights activist Desmond Tutu, stating that neutrality in the face of injustice effectively supports the oppressor.

Bentil further stressed that his political opinions do not reflect the views of the IMANI Africa think tank, where he holds the position of senior vice president. He firmly believes that having individual political views does not hinder the organization’s ability to address national issues objectively.

His unwavering stance has garnered criticism, particularly for his endorsement of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential aspirations.

Despite the pushback, Bentil maintains that Dr. Bawumia deserves a fair chance and expressed confidence in his ability to perform better than former President Mahama if given the opportunity.

However, he made it clear that the current government’s failures should not be passed on to Dr. Bawumia.

He acknowledged the need for change in the transition to the next government and expressed his hopes that key members of the current administration would not be part of Dr. Bawumia’s team.
