The endorsement of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2024 NPP flagbearer by the Vice President of Imani Ghana, Kofi Bentil, has resulted in threats to both his life and his businesses. Despite the threats, Bentil remains resolute and unwavering, determined to continue speaking out, regardless of the danger.
In a recent interview with Newsfile host Samson Lardy Anyeni on Joy News, Bentil revealed the disturbing nature of the threats he has been receiving.
He emphasized that while he welcomes debate and discourse, the level of aggression and insult he has encountered is unacceptable. Although he acknowledges the potential price he may have to pay for endorsing Dr. Bawumia, he stands by his decision and believes that every individual deserves a fair hearing.
Bentil took to Facebook to call on Ghanaians to grant the Vice President a fair and objective assessment of his capabilities.
He firmly believes that Dr. Bawumia, as someone who has never been President, deserves the opportunity to showcase his potential, calling for fairness in evaluating him, especially in comparison to former President John Mahama.
Despite facing backlash from some quarters, Bentil remained undeterred, stressing the need for presenting facts and acknowledging that convincing people is a different matter altogether. He clarified that his endorsement of Dr. Bawumia was based on the belief that he is a better option than the former President and flagbearer of the NDC.
The responses to his endorsement have been mixed, with some questioning his motives and others supporting his right to express an opinion. The situation has highlighted the importance of freedom of expression and the need for respectful discourse, even in the face of disagreement.
Bentil’s bravery in the face of threats and his commitment to expressing his beliefs demonstrate the necessity of open and fair dialogue in political discourse. As Ghana prepares for the upcoming elections, it is essential to uphold the principles of democratic debate and respect for differing opinions.
