The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) is actively enhancing its initiatives to reconnect the African Diaspora with their heritage. In collaboration with the African American Association of Ghana (AAAG), the GTA is introducing cultural experiences steeped in history and identity.

During this year’s Juneteenth celebration in Accra, Kofi Atta Kakra Kusi, the Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs at GTA, highlighted the strengthening partnership between the two organizations, emphasizing its importance within Ghana’s overarching Pan-African vision.

The lively celebration featured a vibrant parade and cultural festival, serving as a lead-up to the upcoming Panafest Emancipation Festival. Mr. Kusi commended AAAG for its crucial role in presenting the Black Star Experience, a standout attraction of Panafest, which is based on seven thematic pillars: cinema, audio, cuisine, aesthetics, style, literature, and heritage.

“Our collaboration with AAAG has been ongoing, with several activities planned throughout the year,” noted Mr. Kusi, underlining that sustained partnerships are vital for promoting the Black Agenda.

The Juneteenth event, marking the 1865 emancipation of enslaved African Americans, received significant support from the GTA and welcomed participants from the global African Diaspora. Mr. Kusi described the occasion as a milestone in affirming cultural identity and fostering reconnection.

“It empowers individuals to embrace their identity as Africans,” he stated.

In addition to symbolic engagement, GTA’s involvement and staff participation highlight its dedication to leveraging cultural tourism as a means to enhance Ghana’s economy and strengthen connections with the Diaspora.

Relating the event to the broader reparations dialogue featured in this year’s Panafest, Mr. Kusi asserted, “We must include Diaspora Africans in discussions about reparations. It’s time to reclaim what rightfully belongs to us as Africans who have endured enslavement.”
