Renowned Ghanaian music group, Alabaster Box, is gearing up for a legal battle with popular artist Medikal, over alleged copyright infringement. The group claims that Medikal sampled their hit song “Akwaaba” without obtaining the necessary authorization.
In a formal notice sent to Medikal through their legal representatives, Sustineri Attorneys, Alabaster Box asserts that the opening seconds of his song “Welcome to Africa” closely resemble their copyrighted composition.
They argue that Medikal’s actions constitute the creation of a derivative work that infringes on their exclusive rights.
Furthermore, Alabaster Box alleges that Medikal’s familiarity with their music indicates a deliberate infringement.
The group points out that “Welcome to Africa” has received widespread promotion on various digital and traditional platforms, including Medikal’s verified YouTube channel, where the song has amassed over 72,000 views. Alabaster Box insists that this promotion unfairly exploits their intellectual property for financial gain.
As a result, Alabaster Box has demanded the immediate removal of the song from all platforms, cessation of its public performance and marketing, and the submission of all relevant agreements and financial records. Failure to comply with these demands may lead to legal action, including a court injunction and claims for damages.
