Love and heartbreak are intertwined in the lives of many, and music often serves as a source of comfort during these emotional times. In Ghana, when relationships come to an end, people don’t just wallow in silence – they turn up the volume on their favorite heartbreak songs.

Recent data from Spotify reveals an interesting trend: Ghanaian men seem to gravitate towards sad music when dealing with heartbreak.

In fact, a staggering 68% of heartbreak song listeners on Spotify in Ghana are men, as opposed to only 31% being women. This challenges the stereotype of men being less emotional or vulnerable in matters of the heart.

Interestingly, the love for heartbreak music in Ghana has seen a significant increase of 226% over the past three years, particularly on Valentine’s Day. While some may be celebrating love, others are finding solace in melancholic tunes on the day of love.

When it comes to the ultimate heartbreak songs in Ghana, global hits like “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi, “lovely” by Billie Eilish and Khalid, “Easy On Me” by Adele, “In The Stars” by Benson Boone, and “Say You Won’t Let Go” by James Arthur are among the top favorites. These songs capture the raw emotions of a breakup and the pain of moving on in a poignant way.

Interestingly, Ghanaians seem to prefer listening to heartbreak songs in the evening, with peak streaming times around 6:00 PM. This suggests that many turn to music as a means of processing their emotions as the day comes to a close.
