Ghanaian music duo Lali x Lola have made a passionate plea for the reinstatement of the Group of the Year category at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards.

In a statement released on February 3, 2025, the talented twins expressed their concerns about the absence of this category from the award scheme.

The duo highlighted the recent resurgence of talented and impactful music groups in Ghana, emphasizing the significant contributions these groups are making to the industry.

With chart-topping hits, compelling live performances, and a renewed sense of collaboration, groups such as Dope Nation, Keche, Team Eternity, and Bhad Mayors, along with Lali x Lola themselves, are driving the industry forward with their collective energy.

As advocates for unity, collaboration, and innovation among artists, Lali x Lola believe that bringing back the Best Performing Group category would be a powerful recognition of this creative momentum. They urge the Telecel Ghana Music Awards Board to consider reinstating this category for the 2025 edition and beyond.

The Group of the Year category was removed from the list of categories in 2022 by the Telecel Ghana Music Awards Board.

According to Robert Klah, the Head of Public Events and Communications for Charterhouse and a member of the awards scheme board, the decision to scrap the category was due to a lack of competitiveness.

While the category was rested for the year due to insufficient participation, industry stakeholders, including Lali x Lola, are calling for its reinstatement. The sterling performances by groups like Dope Nation and Team Eternity Ghana have further fueled the demand for the return of the Group of the Year category.

With the music industry in Ghana experiencing a vibrant collective energy from various talented groups, the reintroduction of the Group of the Year category at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards could serve as a significant acknowledgement of the impact and contribution of these groups.
