Ghanaian filmmaker Peter Sedufia has spoken out against the high taxes imposed on businesses in the creative industry.
In a letter addressed to the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Peter expressed his concerns about how these taxes are hindering the growth of their enterprises.
This comes in the midst of calls from various creatives for the government to find ways to alleviate the burden of these taxes on their work.
In his letter to Honourable Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Peter congratulated her on her new role and highlighted the challenges faced by filmmakers in Ghana due to the high taxes imposed on the creative economy.
Peter explained that for every sale made in cinemas, the government takes about 30%, leaving filmmakers with a smaller share of the revenue.
He also compared the tax rates in Ghana to those in Nigeria, where filmmakers pay far less in taxes and have access to a larger number of cinemas.
With only one major cinema chain in Ghana and limited opportunities for filmmakers to showcase their work theatrically, Peter emphasized the need for the government to address the issue of high taxes in the creative industry.
He urged the Minister to consider the impact of these taxes on businesses in the creative economy and take steps to mitigate their effects.
