The Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) has commended Rex Omar for his outstanding accomplishments during his time as the organization’s Board Chairman.

In a statement released by the Acting Chief Executive Officer of GHAMRO, Jackson Brefo, Rex’s contributions towards ensuring fair distribution of royalties, improving royalty collection methods, enhancing welfare, infrastructural development, and promoting transparency were highlighted.

Appointed as the BOD chairman of GHAMRO on the 22nd of March 2017, Rex faced significant challenges in steering the organization towards growth without any working capital or government support. Despite these hurdles, he led his team with determination and vision.

Under Rex’s leadership, GHAMRO saw a substantial increase in the distribution of royalties to authors, composers, and publishers. The society’s highest earner went from receiving GH¢4,000 every six months to now receiving GH¢50,000. This significant growth was achieved even with regulatory challenges and limited financial resources.

In terms of royalty collection, Rex Omar’s administration took important steps to improve efficiency. The percentage of radio/TV stations paying for music usage increased from 5% to over 10%. Legal actions were initiated against major broadcasting networks and telecommunication companies to enforce royalty payments and protect the rights of GHAMRO members.

Infrastructure development was also a priority under Rex’s leadership. Despite starting with minimal resources, GHAMRO now boasts a three-story building to accommodate all Collective Management Organizations (CMOs). Efforts are ongoing to establish GHAMRO offices at cultural centers across Ghana.

Transparency and accountability were key principles of Rex Omar’s administration. Annual audited accounts were consistently published and made accessible to members and the public. An audit ordered by the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice found no financial irregularities during Rex’s tenure.

Additionally, Rex Omar introduced welfare initiatives such as a Tier 3 and life insurance policy for GHAMRO members, providing support during challenging times.

Rex Omar’s leadership at GHAMRO has been characterized by integrity, dedication, and a commitment to advancing the interests of Ghanaian musicians and creatives.
