The Ghanaian music industry is mourning the loss of one of its greatest icons, Teddy Osei of Osibisa fame, who passed away at the age of 88 in London on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
Bessa Simons, the President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), confirmed the sad news, describing Teddy Osei’s death as a significant loss to the music community in Ghana.
Teddy Osei, who co-founded Osibisa in 1969, was known for his unique blend of Afrobeat, highlife, and rock music that garnered global recognition.
Born in Kumasi in December 1937, Teddy Osei’s passion for music began at a young age when he was introduced to musical instruments.
He started playing the saxophone during his college years in Sekondi, where he attempted to form a band with friends after the original saxophonist missed practices. Teddy honed his skills by playing along to jazz records, ultimately shaping his artistry.
After college, Teddy briefly worked as a building inspector before forming his first band, The Comets, which experienced moderate success. In 1962, he traveled to London on a government grant to study music and drama but had to leave the program due to political changes in Ghana.
Teddy Osei’s contribution to the music industry and his legacy as a musician will forever be remembered. His unique musical style and groundbreaking work with Osibisa have left an indelible mark on the Ghanaian music scene. Rest in peace, Teddy Osei.
