Following the successful inauguration of John Dramani Mahama as the 6th President of the 4th Republic of Ghana, there is anticipation around his upcoming appointments for various positions, including the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture.
This ministry was established by Mahama during his first term, bringing together tourism, culture, and creative arts under one umbrella.
The decision to merge these sectors was a response to calls from stakeholders in the cultural and creative industries for a dedicated ministry or integration into a relevant sector.
The Ministry for the Orange Economy, as it is sometimes referred to, has shown progress since its inception, with tourism being more organized while the culture and creative sectors are in the process of being structured.
However, the key to further development lies in the appointment of a minister who understands the intricacies of tourism, arts, and culture.
This individual must be able to navigate the industry effectively, without needing a prolonged period of adjustment.
In a previous article, it was suggested that the President should consider appointing someone from the industry itself, without the need for deputy ministers who often have limited roles.
One name that has emerged in discussions is Sadiq Abdulai Abu, also known as Baba Sadiq.
With a background in media, communications, and entrepreneurship, Sadiq has made significant contributions to the creative economy through his work with music media, events, and digital streaming services.
He is also a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and has served as the party’s spokesperson on tourism, arts, and culture.
Another potential candidate is Abla Dzifa Gomashie, a renowned actress, film producer, and scriptwriter who previously served as Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts.
Gomashie’s extensive experience in the industry, coupled with her academic background in African Studies and Theatre Arts, positions her as a strong contender for the ministerial position.
Rex Owusu Marfo, popularly known as Rex Omar, is also being considered for the role due to his involvement in the creative industry as a musician and advocate for intellectual property rights.
As the former Chairman of the Ghana Music Rights Organization, Rex Omar has championed various initiatives to support Ghanaian artists and protect their work.
