Iconic Nigerian Afrobeats sensation, Tiwa Savage, has recently opened up about the challenges she faces regarding backlash over her fashion choices, especially in relation to her age.
In a candid discussion on the Receipts podcast, the singer addressed the double standards she encounters compared to global stars like Beyoncé.
Tiwa Savage pointed out the disparity in how she is criticized for wearing bikinis at her age, while Beyoncé, who is also in her 40s, is celebrated for her beauty and confidence in doing the same.
She expressed frustration at the constant age-shaming she receives from Nigerians, emphasizing that she should be able to wear what she wants because she is comfortable in her own skin.
The singer highlighted the contrasting reactions between Americans and Nigerians, stating, “Beyoncé is in her 40s and wears bikinis but Americans don’t age shame her.
They would be like, for her age, black don’t crack. It’s more celebrated when you look good in your older age.” Tiwa Savage stressed that she wants her son to see her as a powerful and beautiful woman, rather than being restricted by societal standards.
