Football is more than just a game, and the impact it has had on Bouake, the second-largest city in Côte d’Ivoire, is proof of that.

In September 2002, Bouake was hit with the Civil War, which led to troops taking control of the Northern Part of the West African country. The city, once vibrant, was left battered and in disarray.

During the war, Bouake’s Stade de la Paix was used as an execution site for police officers and military soldiers. The city was in a state of fear and chaos, with child soldiers patrolling the streets and occasional gunshots at night.

However, in June 2007, the Stade de la Paix hosted Côte d’Ivoire’s game against Madagascar in the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON 2008 qualifiers, which brought hope and unity to the city. This marked the beginning of a major turning point for Bouake.

Fast forward to today, Bouake is hosting the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON Côte d’Ivoire 2023 at the renovated Stade de la Paix, which now has a capacity of 40,000 seats.

The city, once a base for rebels, is now embracing the African football community with pomp and pageantry. The tournament has not only brought the beauty of football to Bouake but has also resulted in infrastructure development, an economic boost for locals, and an upliftment of spirits.

Locals who have witnessed both the dark times and the transformation of Bouake are excited about the city’s current state. The beauty and uniting force of football are evident, as it has brought people together and created a sense of excitement and freedom in the city.

As the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON comes to an end, Bouake will have much to look back on and be proud of. It is a testament to the power of football to change lives and bring communities together.
