Ghanaian musician Okyeame Kwame has responded to claims by veteran broadcaster Tommy Annan-Forson that modern songs lack storylines.
In a recent conversation with Kwesi Kyei Darkwah on CTV, Tommy expressed his disinterest in most songs released in recent times due to their lack of content.
According to Tommy, modern music is filled with “blabber music” that lacks a storyline, making it difficult for him to engage with the songs. In response to Tommy’s criticism, Okyeame Kwame took to Facebook to share his perspective.
Okyeame Kwame noted that we are now in the visual-audio era, where songs are complemented by music videos, TikTok dances, and other visual elements.
He explained that modern pop music focuses less on lyrically telling stories and instead leaves room for audience interpretation through various forms of social media reactions.
The musician acknowledged that popular music in contemporary times may not emphasize storytelling in the traditional sense, but rather utilize other tools to convey emotions and messages.
He emphasized the importance of respecting the artistry of creators and allowing the audience to interpret and engage with music in their unique ways.
While Tommy Annan-Forson believes that music should always tell a story and connect with listeners on a deeper level, Okyeame Kwame highlighted the evolving nature of music consumption in the digital age.
He encouraged DJs, radio presenters, and musicians to prioritize quality music that resonates with consumers and sparks meaningful interactions.
