Ghanaian broadcaster and event MC, Merqury Quaye, has revealed that he was the first person to introduce the term ‘hype man’ in Ghana.
In an interview on Daybreak Hitz with Doreen Avio, he made this statement in response to comments made by Kojo Manuel, an award winner in the Hype man category at the recent Ghana DJ Awards.
Merqury, who is also the Founder of the Guinness Ghana DJ Awards, expressed his interest in the Hype man category and emphasized his role in popularizing the term in Ghana.
He mentioned that the inclusion of this category in the awards was a deliberate decision and he is pleased with the progress it has made.
Kojo Manuel, who won the Best MC/Hypeman of the Year award alongside MC Portfolio, expressed his discontent with sharing the award, stating that he believed he deserved it outright.
In an interview on 3 Music TV, he questioned the concept of a tie in the awards and voiced his frustration at having to explain his win.
Responding to Kojo’s comments, Merqury Quaye expressed his disappointment in the YFM presenter’s remarks.
He defended the decision to have a tie in the awards, citing examples from other prestigious award ceremonies like the Grammys and BET where ties have occurred in the past.
Merqury questioned why Kojo had not raised similar concerns about previous awards he had received.
Merqury further emphasized that the Guinness Ghana DJ Awards, organized by Merqury Republic, follow established processes and criteria in determining award winners.
He urged Kojo Manuel to understand and respect the decisions made by the awards scheme.
The dispute over the Best MC/Hypeman award highlights the competitive nature of the entertainment industry in Ghana, as personalities strive for recognition and accolades for their work.
