The Ghanaian government recently introduced the GMX App, a music streaming platform designed to showcase Ghanaian music on a global scale and ensure fair compensation for artists.
While this new platform has the potential to revolutionize the music industry in Ghana, concerns have surfaced regarding the lack of consultation with key industry stakeholders during its development.
Seven Xavier, the President of the Music Alliance, expressed disappointment on Channel One TV’s program, The Chat, on November 16, 2024. Xavier criticized the government for excluding important players from the music and technology sectors in the development process of the GMX App.
He emphasized the importance of involving individuals who have a deep understanding of the music business and technology in order to create a successful streaming platform.
Furthermore, Solomon Appier-Sign, a Software Engineer, raised additional issues with the GMX App, including the absence of a transparent revenue-sharing model and features to enhance user engagement, such as song recommendations.
According to Appier-Sign, the key to increasing artist revenue lies in keeping users on the platform for longer periods of time through engaging features like personalized song recommendations.
It is essential for the government to address these concerns and work closely with industry experts to ensure the success of the GMX App and the promotion of Ghanaian music on a global scale.
