October 30, 2024, marks a significant day in the history of Ghanaian music as we remember the 21st anniversary of the passing of the legendary Hiplife/Dancehall artiste, Terry Bonchaka.
Born Terrence Nii Okan Mensah Adjetey, Terry Bonchaka met his untimely demise in a tragic car accident on the Legon-Okpoglo road in 2003, shortly after a performance at the Akwafo Hall Week celebration. The iconic musician was only 21 years old at the time of his passing.
Known for his electrifying stage presence and hit songs such as “Ghana Ladies (Gbeebi Akle),” “African Tsoo,” “Zoozey,” and “Puulele,” Terry Bonchaka was crowned the Hiplife Champion in 2001 for his exceptional talent and unique style.
In a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, Reagan Mends, the former manager of Terry Bonchaka and now an entertainment journalist at Citi FM/Channel One TV, expressed his continued disbelief at the passing of time and vowed to uphold the legacy of the late “Puulele” Crooner.
Terry Bonchaka’s influence in the Ghanaian music industry extended beyond his own career, as he mentored and inspired several celebrated artists, including King Ayisoba, Sherifa Gunu, and Shatta Wale.
Interestingly, he was also the grandson of the late Speaker of Parliament, Peter Ala Adjetey.
