Renowned Ghanaian actor Adjetey Anang, also known as Pusher, has emphasized the importance of storytelling in addressing societal challenges such as illegal mining, commonly referred to as Galamsey in Ghana.
In response to a question about the role of individuals in the creative industry in advocating against illegal mining, Anang highlighted the power of storytelling in conveying important messages.
He mentioned that through their craft, creative industry professionals can effectively raise awareness about pressing issues like Galamsey without necessarily resorting to protests.
Anang stated, “We’ve learned to do that so well in the stories that we tell and so every now and then if you watch our productions we have adaptations of them, we change certain lines, we inject some of these things for the audience to know that we can have the entertainment and fun.
But there are serious issues going on there and have to pay attention so we are able to craft that well in the stories that we tell and that’s the best and I think that that’s where we should be heard loudly that hitting the streets.”
While emphasizing the importance of peaceful demonstrations in raising awareness about critical issues like Galamsey, Anang also expressed his support for lawful protests.
Recently, a three-day demonstration organized by Democracy Hub aimed to pressure the government to address the detrimental effects of Galamsey on water bodies and forest reserves.
However, approximately 40 protesters were detained by the police for allegedly committing various offenses during the demonstration, leading to public outrage and calls for their release.
Some individuals have also criticized popular celebrities like Sarkodie, Shatta Wale, and Stonebwoy for remaining silent on the incident.
