99-year-old World War II veteran Joseph Ashitey Hammond unveils memoir

Joseph Ashitey Hammond, a distinguished Ghanaian World War II veteran and former Warrant Officer Class One, has recently launched his autobiography titled “Joseph Ashitey Hammond” at the Kofi Annan International Training Centre in Teshie. At 99 years old, Joseph Ashitey Hammond is the last surviving witness to the historic February 28 Crossroad incident.

Having served in the Gold Coast Regiment at the young age of 16 during World War II, Joseph Ashitey Hammond’s autobiography delves into his remarkable journey of decades of service to society, highlighting his unwavering commitment to justice and principles.

The book launch event was graced by notable dignitaries such as the Teshie Mankralo, Nii Okang Duamro III, Vice Marshal Felix Asante, and the Hon. Ayikwe Otoo. The Ghana Armed Forces also honored the veteran with a citation for his exceptional service.

The event was not only a platform for the unveiling of the autobiography but also provided entertainment for the attendees, with popular Ghanaian musician Adotey Tetor performing and ace broadcaster Kafui Dey taking on the role of an auctioneer.

The launch of Joseph Ashitey Hammond’s autobiography is a significant milestone in honoring the legacy of a Ghanaian hero whose story and contributions have left an indelible mark on history.
