Renowned dancer and choreographer Kafayat Shafau, popularly known as Kaffy, has voiced her concerns about the exploitation of dance for purposes of prostitution.
In a recent interview with Saturday Beats,
she expressed disappointment in how some girls use dance as a facade for selling their bodies, which, in her opinion, undermines the true essence of the art form.
According to Kaffy, dance should not be synonymous with hustling or selling one’s body.
She highlighted that the focus of dance should be on genuine skills and artistry rather than the sexual aspect.
Despite these challenges, she acknowledged that the industry’s rapid growth allows for various expressions and approaches to dance.
Emphasizing the importance of integrity in dance, Kaffy stated, “Dance is an art form, but it can sometimes become overly sensual.
I have set personal boundaries and there are limits I will not cross. Being sexy or sensual does not require nudity.”
In a message to aspiring dancers, Kaffy encouraged them to stay true to their passion and resist the pressures to conform.
She highlighted the diverse career paths that the dance world offers, including executive roles, coaching, dance science, injury prevention, and therapy, beyond just performing in music videos and clubs.
Addressing the stereotype about women not supporting each other in the industry, Kaffy debunked this perception as a misconception.
She pointed out that both men and women have their own rivalries and that the belief that women do not support each other is often shaped by popular narratives.
Kaffy concluded by stating, “Women are more emotionally expressive, which may make their disapproval more visible.
However, it is important to recognize that both genders can be either supportive or undermining towards each other.”
It is essential for dancers, especially women, to uphold their integrity and authenticity in the evolving dance industry.
