Convicted murderer Dorothea Puente, also known as the “Death House Landlady”, is the main focus of Netflix’s documentary series, Worst Roommate Ever.

The true crime series delves into the chilling crimes committed by serial killer Dorothea as she ran a boarding house in Sacramento during the 1980s.

Dorothea Puente would take in elderly and homeless individuals as tenants and then proceed to drug them to the point of rendering them incapacitated. Following the drugging, she would murder her tenants and bury their bodies in her backyard and garden, all while cashing in on their social security checks.

In November 1988, Dorothea was arrested and charged with a total of nine murders, including her former boyfriend and eight tenants. Her trial began in February 1993, and she was ultimately convicted of three counts of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Despite the guilty verdict, Dorothea maintained her innocence until her death in 2011 at the age of 82.

The Los Angeles Times referred to Dorothea Puente as the “Death House Landlady”, a nickname that stuck with her in the media throughout her trial. Puente’s story was the subject of the Netflix series Worst Roommate Ever, which premiered in 2022 and detailed her heinous crimes.
