Rickwood Field, located in Alabama, holds the prestigious title of being the United States’ oldest professional baseball park. Since its establishment in 1910, the stadium has undergone numerous renovations to remain a historic symbol of America’s favorite pastime.
This year, on June 20, 2024, Rickwood Field will host a special game between the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals. The match serves as a tribute to the late Giants center fielder, Willie Mays, who passed away at the age of 93 on June 18. Mays, who started his career with the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro American League, went on to become a legendary figure in Major League Baseball.
Major League Baseball announced that the game at Rickwood Field will celebrate the rich history of both the Negro American League and Mays’ illustrious career. Despite not being able to attend the event, Mays expressed his gratitude to all those involved in organizing the tribute, including MLB, the Giants, the Cardinals, and the fans.
The game between the Giants and Cardinals will kick off at 7:15 pm and will be broadcast live on Fox. For those unable to watch it on television, the game will also be available for streaming on Fubo and the league’s official website.
As fans gear up to witness this historic event at Rickwood Field, the spirit of baseball and the legacy of Willie Mays continue to inspire generations of players and fans alike.
