Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has stirred up a spirited discussion with his recent comments, declaring that no rapper can match the consistency and fame of Nigerian music icons Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Davido.
During a recent interview, Sarkodie clarified that his remarks in his song “Brag” were not meant as a dig but rather to make a point about fame and consistency in the music industry. His latest track has sparked a lot of buzz, leading to responses from various rappers across the continent.
Sarkodie made it clear that his mention of Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy was not intended as a diss. “Definitely, I am not throwing shade at anyone, and if I were, it would be directed at rappers. The biggest shade would be that I didn’t mention any rappers because none of them are as consistent and famous as these singers,” he explained.
In response to reactions from fellow musicians like Lyrical Joe, Dremo, and Don Itchi, who have reacted to the “Brag” instrumentals, Sarkodie sees it as a positive development for the music industry. He reiterated that “Brag” is not a diss track, pointing out that artists like Black Sherif were included in the references.
Sarkodie further elaborated on his intentions, stating, “It’s great PR, and you cannot pay for this. Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Davido cannot think I am dissing them… They are not rappers. I am addressing rappers about how long I have been in the game. I am simply using Nigeria’s top 3 singers as a reference. It’s true, I was there when they all emerged, and it’s about references.”
He continued to highlight the organic buzz surrounding “Brag,” which he sees as advantageous, especially as he gears up to release his “Championship Mixtape.” “Even if we sat down to plan it, we wouldn’t achieve the same organic reach as it has now,” Sarkodie noted.
