The Hart High School community is mourning the loss of their beloved principal, Troy Moran, who tragically passed away from a heart attack at age 46 on Saturday, April 27, 2024.
Moran, a Michigan native, began his role as principal at Hart High School in 2021. During his time there, he initiated the Ride with Pride program, a collaborative effort between law enforcement and schools to promote safe and positive choices among students.
The program aimed to help students make wise decisions both inside and outside of school, focusing on academics, attendance, behavior, and prevention of drugs, tobacco, alcohol, and safe driving. As part of this program, a car was raffled off to a student at the end of each school year.
Prior to his role at Hart High School, Moran had also served as the principal of Montague High School for four years and had been a teacher at the Mona Shores school district for several years. He had also held positions as the high school dean of students and upper elementary school principal at Oakridge Public Schools.
Moran, who hailed from Whitehall, Michigan, graduated from Whitehall High School in 1996 before pursuing his education at Western Michigan University.
Following his unexpected passing, Hart High School Superintendent Mark Platt expressed his shock and sadness at the loss of Moran. Platt described Moran as a great person, father, and principal who had an infectious smile and laugh.
The Hart High School community has come together to support one another during this difficult time. The district has provided counseling services for both staff and students, and grief counselors from neighboring districts are also offering their support.
As the community mourns the loss of Moran, plans are being made for how to move forward for the rest of the school year. While a replacement principal has not yet been announced, the focus remains on honoring Moran’s legacy and continuing the work he started at Hart High School.
Moran leaves behind two teenage daughters, Elle and Reagan. While details about his marital status remain unknown, his impact on the lives of those he touched is clear, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
