Why is the solar eclipse dangerous and can cause sore eye

For many people, witnessing a solar eclipse is a thrilling and unforgettable experience. However, it’s essential to be aware of the potential dangers that come with it, especially when it comes to your eyes.

The most significant risk associated with a solar eclipse is the potential harm to your eyesight. Dr. Robert Massey from the Royal Astronomical Society emphasizes the importance of never looking directly at the sun with the naked eye, as even a thin crescent of the sun can cause damage to your eyes.

This damage occurs due to the intense solar ultraviolet rays that can burn the cells in the retina of your eye. Since the retina does not have pain receptors, you may not even realize that damage is occurring. Once these cells are damaged, there is no way to reverse the harm, leading to permanent issues such as blurred vision and color distortion.

To safely observe a solar eclipse, it is recommended to use safe solar viewing glasses or a handheld solar viewer at all times. Regular sunglasses, no matter how dark, are not sufficient for protecting your eyes during an eclipse. Additionally, looking through cameras, telescopes, or binoculars without proper eye protection is also dangerous.

If you find yourself without appropriate glasses, you can create a pin-hole viewer using a cereal box as an alternative. This method allows you to indirectly view the eclipse without causing harm to your eyes.

When purchasing eclipse glasses, it is important to ensure that they meet international safety standards, including ISO certification for compliance with the ISO 12312-2 standard for safe solar filter glasses. Be cautious of purchasing eclipse viewers from dubious sources, as counterfeit glasses can pose a risk to your eyesight.
