A young widow in Ghana is on a mission to break the Guinness World Record for the longest reading marathon and set a new one in the process.
27-year-old Sophia Boadi has embarked on a challenge to read continuously for 6 days, starting from March 15, 2024. Her reading marathon is taking place at the SG Mall in Kumasi and is expected to conclude on Thursday, March 21, 2024, or even beyond.
The current record holder, from Turkey, read for 124 hours with just one book. However, Sophia is armed with at least 460 books, thanks to a collaboration with the Ghana Library Association. Among the books she plans to read are memoirs by actress Yvonne Nelson and works from esteemed personalities such as Gifty Anti, Adjetey Anang, and Nakeeyat, as well as books by Ghanaian publishers.
Sophia’s goal is to showcase the intellectual richness of Ghanaian authors and publishers to the global audience. She also aims to inspire young widows like herself, reminding them that losing a partner does not mean losing hope or the drive to achieve one’s goals.
After applying for the record attempt in June 2023, Sophia received official approval six months later in November 2023. She is confident in her ability to secure victory, with faith in God by her side.
