Former German midfield maestro, Toni Kroos, has announced his decision to come out of retirement from international football. The Real Madrid player had decided to hang his boots on the international stage in 2021, after a successful 11-year career with the German national team.
However, the 34-year-old has had a change of heart and has opted to make a comeback to the national team. His decision comes on the heels of discussions with the German national team coach, Julian Nagelsmann.
In an Instagram post, Kroos stated, “I’ll be playing for Germany again from March. Why? Because I was asked by the coach and I’m up for it.” His return presents an opportunity for him to feature in the upcoming international friendlies against France and the Netherlands.
The former World Cup winner is now available for selection and is likely to be a key component of the German national team at this summer’s Euro 2024, which will be held on home soil in Germany. The tournament will kick off with Germany facing Scotland at the Allianz Arena in Munich on 14th June.
During his initial stint with the national team, Kroos featured in 106 official matches and was part of the German team that reached the semi-finals of the Euro 2010, Euro 2012, and the World Cup 2010. Additionally, he was part of the 2014 World Cup-winning team.
Kroos’ return brings experience and leadership to the team, and his presence will undoubtedly bolster Germany’s chances at Euro 2024.
