Senior high schools owe ECG over GH¢45m – MD

The Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, revealed that the company is facing a growing debt burden from its customers. This revelation provides further insights into the recent disconnection of Accra Academy and other senior high schools from the national electricity grid.

According to Mr. Mahama, the disconnection of these schools is part of a broader nationwide initiative aimed at recovering debts owed to the ECG. He stressed the importance of taking prompt measures to address and recover these outstanding amounts.

Mr. Mahama disclosed that the outstanding bill for schools is almost GH₵45m and that the company is facing a total debt of around GH₵2.5bn nationwide. He also apologized for any inconvenience caused by the disconnection and clarified that it was not the primary aim of the company.

In addition, the ECG revealed that Accra Academy Senior High School was disconnected from the power grid due to an outstanding debt of GH¢400,000. Mr. Mahama expressed his apologies to the affected schools and assured that the company is working with the Ghana Education Service to find a long-lasting solution to these issues.

These revelations shed light on the financial challenges facing the ECG and highlight the urgency of addressing the issue of outstanding debts. It is evident that prompt measures need to be taken to recover these outstanding amounts in order to ensure the financial viability of the company.
