Ghana’s National Petroleum Authority CEO, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid has announced that the long-awaited natural gas-import terminal is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The Tema LNG Terminal Co.’s project, which has faced significant delays, is currently under construction and is scheduled to be completed before the end of the year.
Abdul-Hamid also revealed that the Ghana government has signed an agreement with Equatorial Guinea for the supply of LNG. The imported LNG is intended to meet domestic industrial demand and fuel vehicles equipped to burn compressed natural gas, among other uses.
Equatorial Guinea LNG is majority-owned by Marathon Oil Corp., Sonagas, and Japanese trading company Marubeni. Despite the setbacks the project has faced, Abdul-Hamid remains optimistic about its completion by the end of the year.
This news comes as a much-needed development in Ghana’s energy sector and is expected to have a positive impact on the country’s industrial and vehicular needs. With the completion of the natural gas-import terminal, Ghana is poised to further diversify its energy resources and meet the growing demand for natural gas.
