German national and former World Cup winner Andreas ‘Andi’ Brehme has died at the age of 63. He is survived by his partner Susanne Schaefer and his sons from his previous marriage to Pilar Martinez.
Who was Andreas ‘Andi’ Brehme?
Brehme, born in Hamburg on November 9, 1960, started his professional career with Saarbrücken in 1980. He later joined Kaiserslautern and then Bayern Munich before moving to Inter Milan.
Along with his Italian footballer of the year title in 1989 and 1991 UEFA Cup win, Brehme also spent a year in Spain at Real Zaragoza before returning to Kaiserslautern.
Before retiring, Brehme won 86 caps for Germany, scoring eight goals, and played a pivotal role in Kaiserslautern’s sensational Bundesliga triumph. His partner, Susanne, confirmed Brehme’s passing on February 20, 2024.
According to reports, Brehme was admitted to Ziemssenstrasse Hospital near his apartment in Munich after suffering a heart attack. He was unable to recover and passed away.
After learning of Brehme’s death, his old club Bayern Munich issued a statement, expressing their condolences to his family and friends.
The sad news comes just weeks following the death of Brehme’s mentor and fellow Germany icon Franz Beckenbauer.
