The Ghanaian government bond market experienced a decline in activity according to recent reports.

The total volume exchanged fell by 22.88% week-on-week to GH¢1.03 billion. The February 2028 (coupon: 8.50%) paper was the dominant driver of activity, constituting about 66% of the aggregate market turnover.

In addition, the average Yield-To-Maturity on the 2027-2030 papers increased to 22.31% (+317 basis points) while the 2035-2038 advanced to 22.99% (+592 basis points).

Analysts are predicting that the bond market will continue to be sluggish following the uptick in inflation for January 2024, as investor preference will largely reside in treasury bills for repricing benefits.

This could mean that the bond market may remain subdued for some time to come.
