Chief State Attorney Disbarred by General Legal Council for Receiving GH¢400,000 from Alfred Agbesi Woyome

The General Legal Council (GLC) has disbarred Chief State Attorney at the Office of the Attorney-General, Samuel Nerquaye-Tetteh, for collecting GH¢400,000 from businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome in 2011. This means he can never practice as a lawyer again in Ghana.

The GLC found Mr Nerquaye-Tetteh guilty of professional misconduct and stated that his actions went against Rule 2(2) of the Legal Profession (Professional Conduct and Etiquette) Rules, 1969 (L.I. 613).

According to the GLC, Mr Nerquaye-Tetteh personally directed the transfer of an amount of GH¢400,000 from Mr Woyome to the bank account of his wife while defending the state against a suit by Woyome in 2011. The GLC highlighted that Mr Nerquaye-Tetteh could not provide a reasonable explanation for the transfer of the GH¢400,000 into his wife’s bank account.

The GLC also expressed that Mr Nerquaye-Tetteh’s conduct had a negative impact on the dignity and high standing of the legal profession, ultimately leading to his disbarment. The notice signed by the Judicial Secretary, Justice Cynthia Pamela Koranteng, stated that Mr Nerquaye-Tetteh is prohibited from offering any legal services to the public.

The sanctions against Mr Nerquaye-Tetteh are a clear demonstration of the GLC’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the legal profession and ensuring that professional misconduct is met with appropriate consequences.
