Alejandro Mayorkas is a prominent American lawyer and politician who hails from Havana, Cuba. In his impressive career, he has served as an Assistant US Attorney for the Central District of California and the US Attorney for the Central District of California, to which he was appointed by former president Bill Clinton.
Furthermore, he was the director of Citizenship and Immigration Services for the Barack Obama Administration before being nominated by President Joe Biden to serve as the Secretary of Homeland Security in 2020. On February 2, 2021, he was sworn into the position by vice president Kamala Harris, making history as the first Latino immigrant to serve as the Secretary of Homeland Security.
Reason behind Alejandro Mayorkas impeachment
Alejandro Mayorkas was impeached by the United States House of Representatives on February 13, 2024. The vote resulted in a 214-213 decision to impeach him. The House cited reasons such as “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law” and “a breach of public trust.”
Interestingly, this was the third attempt to impeach Mayorkas, and it is only the second time that a cabinet member has been impeached in US history.
Notably, on February 6, 2024, the House rejected a campaign for his impeachment, and on November 13, 2023, another unsuccessful impeachment campaign was led by Marjorie Taylor Green.
