The Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) plan to propose the removal of certain nuisance taxes through a private member’s bill.

This comes in response to Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent pledge to eliminate the electronic transactions levy, emissions tax, the proposed 15 percent Value Added Tax on electricity, and other taxes introduced by the current government.

Dr Forson stated that the NDC legislators will introduce a private member’s bill on the floor of Parliament to push for the removal of these taxes. He emphasized that if Dr Bawumia is sincere about his intentions, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs should support the bill.

During an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express on February 13, Dr Forson expressed his belief that the majority’s position will confirm the honesty of the NPP flagbearer. He argued that the NDC had opposed these taxes and would strive to have the government remove them.

Dr Forson also mentioned that the NDC is more concerned about the welfare of the people and stated that they would remove the taxes once in office. He urged the government to remove the taxes to show good faith to the people of Ghana.
