The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) recently announced that the 2024 Clean Ghana Campaign will prioritize enhancing air quality in the country’s capital. This decision comes after Accra was ranked as the leading city in the world with the worst air quality, according to the recent IQAir index.
The launch of this year’s campaign took place at Chorkor in Accra on February 7th, and it was revealed by Metropolitan Public Health Director, Florence Kuukyi, that the campaign is beginning in this area due to it being identified as a major hotspot of air pollution in Accra. This is attributed to the large-scale production of smoked fish in the area.
The theme for this year’s campaign is sensitization and education on mitigating air pollution through the Breathe Accra Programme. Specifically, the focus will be on improving air quality by “naming and shaming” individuals who violate sanitation laws in the metropolis. The AMA has deployed eight air sensors to identify air pollution hotspots and is closely monitoring areas such as Chorkor, Agbogbloshie, Mambrobi, and Makola, where significant activities contribute to air pollution.
Director Florence Kuukyi stressed that education and awareness efforts will be intensified in these areas to improve air quality both within the areas and across Accra as a whole. The campaign aims to address the pressing issue of poor air quality in Accra and make tangible improvements to ensure a healthier environment for all residents.
