The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has come out to dispute claims made by the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, regarding the construction of a fish landing site at Keta in the Volta region.
During a recent public lecture at the University of Professional Studies (UPS) in Accra, Dr. Bawumia claimed that the government was undertaking the construction of the fish landing site.
This assertion by the Vice President has been described by the opposition party as unfortunate and a deliberate attempt to deceive the people of the Volta Region for political gain.
The NDC’s Volta Regional Communication Office, Sorkpa Kafui Agbleze, stressed that such deceptive tactics not only undermine the trust of the electorate but also demonstrate a lack of respect for the people of the region and their right to accurate information.
The NDC also highlighted that there were public engagements after the Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, made a public pronouncement on the establishment of the Keta Fishing Port in 2019 at the Hogbetsotso grand durbar.
Additionally, community engagements were held in Keta by the Deputy Minister of Fisheries, the Volta Regional Minister, representatives from the Transport Ministry, and the Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority (GPHA) to create awareness about the project. Friends of the Nation, together with representatives of the Keta Municipal Assembly, also engaged the community in March 2023 about the potential benefits of the project.
The NDC firmly denounced Dr. Bawumia’s spreading of “palpable lies and misinformation to score political points”, especially when it concerns such a vital region as the Volta Region. The party called on the ruling NPP and Dr. Bawumia to accord the people of Ghana respect by refraining from spreading falsehoods in their public addresses.
The NDC also urged the media and the public to remain vigilant and scrutinize the claims of political leaders, ensuring that only the truth prevails in the lead-up to the 2024 Elections. The party reiterated its commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and honesty in governance and called on all citizens to join in the quest for a more truthful and equitable Ghana.
