Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has commended former President John Agyekum Kufuor for his role in initiating the construction of the University of Ghana Stadium, which was officially opened on Friday to host the African Games 2023.

The construction of the stadium began back in 2003 under the Kufuor administration, but the project was subsequently abandoned by subsequent governments. However, the current administration resumed the construction to prepare for the upcoming African Games, making several enhancements such as re-grassing the stadium and upgrading the athletics tracks to meet World Athletics standards.

During the inauguration ceremony on Friday, Dr Bawumia expressed gratitude for the vision of President Kufuor in spearheading the stadium project and acknowledged the contributions of various stakeholders, including the GETFUND and the University of Ghana.

“This stadium’s completion marks a significant milestone, especially considering its tumultuous history,” Dr Bawumia stated. He emphasized the importance of this facility as the University of Ghana commemorates its 75th Anniversary, viewing it as a fitting tribute to the institution and its community.

As Ghana prepares to host the African Games, the Vice President highlighted the stadium’s significance as a lasting legacy and an emblem of progress for the country. The completion of the University of Ghana Stadium serves as a testament to effective collaboration and unwavering dedication to development initiatives in the nation.
