According to the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), students who opt for elective science in Senior High School (SHS) will no longer be required to take Core Mathematics and Integrated Science.

NaCCA’s Director General, Professor Edward Appiah, explained that this change is part of the new curriculum designed to enhance the educational system. He stated that the decision to eliminate these subjects is based on the extensive study of Mathematics and Science that Science students already undergo, rendering the additional courses unnecessary.

The new curriculum is expected to be implemented in the 2024/2025 academic year and seeks to streamline the subject offerings for science students. Under the new curriculum, Science students will only study Core Mathematics, as their study of Mathematics is already comprehensive enough to meet their academic needs.

Professor Appiah also clarified that the studious repetition of Integrated Science in SHS was a result of the junior high school’s weak science curriculum. However, with the development of the new curriculum, the junior high school science curriculum is now deemed sufficient, negating the need for a repetition of the course.

This new move by NaCCA is a step towards restructuring the educational system to better cater to the academic needs of students, particularly in the realm of elective science studies.
